gingrich calling obama the food stamp president and this general idea of that it is the food stamps of the new welfare and we need to get rid of it, that is actually a new thing. what they want to do is turn it into a block grant it instead of having a legal right, as you do have, just leave it to the states. they can help or not. that is what we did to welfare. that is the other story i would tell you. that was definitely bipartisan -- not all democrats -- but a bipartisan agreement in the wrong direction in 1996. and that is a very sad and unfortunate terrible story because now of cash assistance for mothers -- and this is a story about mothers and tobin, about women and children -- is about on in more than half of the country. in the state of wyoming, they are the big winners on this. barely 600 people in the whole state, mothers and children, receive temporary a substance for needy families. no wonder -- you know you have 6 million people who will only have food stamps, no other income now? it is totally astonishing. tavis: let me ask a question of each of those points. we will sta

newt gingrich said president obama's remarks on the trayvon martin case was disgraceful. trying to turn it into a racial issue is wrong. here is president obama on the trayvon martin case. >> i think every parent in america should be able to understand why it's imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and that everybody pulls together, federal, state and local to figure out how this tragedy happened. my main message is to the parents of trayvon martin. if i had a son, he'd look like trayvon martin. >> how much more reasonable, calm and emp thetic do you have to be. it's not just words. the president's record is replete with instances of him finding common ground with the reactionary right which most of us on the left find pret rep prehenceable. even the most recent legislation he signed was opposed by many progressives. get your cell phones out. i want to know what you think. tonight's question, who is dividing the country. text a for mitt romney. text b for president barack obama to 6226239 or go to our blog at edmsnbc.com. i'll bring results later in the sh s

and newt gingrich appears to love being disliked. most worrying for mr. romney, though, is this. the 34% of people who say they like him is the lowest "i like you" number for any leading presidential candidate in this poll at this point in the primary season since 1984. ow. this is not the sort of thing that just befalls you as a candidate, though. sad as this may be, this is not the sort of thing that just happens to you. this is less like a stomach flu and more like a hangover. this is something that you kind of have to bring upon yourself. and campaigning today in wisconsin, mr. romney once again showed how he has brought numbers this bad upon himself. unprompted, mr. romney brought up what he said was a humorous anecdote -- he used the word "humorous" -- regarding michigan and wisconsin. listen to this. this is the story that he volunteered to wisconsin voters today during a telephone town hall. listen. >> i have a few connections with the state of wisconsin. one of the most humorous, i think, really, is to my father. you may rem

understanding gingrich h the mind of gingrich is key to understanding the big news that politico.com broke late last night. the news that he's drastically cutting back his campaign schedule and laying off a third of his staff. to all the world that sounds like newt gingrich is quitting. if you ask the campaign, it's not quitting the campaign, it's a new strategy for sitting the campaign. they can sit out the campaign, come in third or fourth place in the primary and have newt gingrich named the winner at the convention in august. >> look, clearly we're going to have to go on a fierily tight budget to get from here to tampa, but i think we can do it. i intend to be there all the way to tampa. >> all the way through to tampa. >> if you think of the republican presidential race as a marathon, newt gingrich has stopped running in the marathon and decided to drive to the finish line instead. you mean the first one across the finish line wins? okay. i'll meet you there. i don't know why all these suckers are running. my way is so much faster, and

you say gingrich as the main opponent of mitt romney. i think there is a chance, given the trajectory of gingrich's campaign, i think there is a chance that santorum will eclipse gingrich as the alternative, the role he almost had after iowa, he lost it and it could have ramifications down the line. the more significant thing is about what it says about mitt romney and his standing as the front runner. he wants everybody to see him as the ineffortable candidate in this thing. inevitable candidates don't have nights like this. with missouri we can say it is different because gingrich wasn't on the ballot but i would look at that and say, so the gingrich voters all decided to vote for santorum tonight. they didn't say i can't vote for newt gingrich i will vote for mitt romney instead. that suggests that the dynamic that we have been talking about, will the conservatives ultimately settle on mitt romney. we had a test and they didn't. the other thing is in minnesota and o colorado, caucus states that is a damaging formula for romney so far.
